OFF TO RIO: RIO IS CONQUERING LATIN AMERICA

  • Launch of RIO in Latin America with Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus
  • Current customer test in Brazil
  • All VW trucks and buses to be equipped with the RIO Box from 2019

Following its successful launch in Europe, RIO is taking the next step: Go-live of the RIO platform with its digital services in Latin America. Currently RIO is conducting a six-month customer test in Brazil until March 2019. RIO will be available to all customers in Latin America from next year. From 2019 Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus will start equipping its Euro 5 vehicles ex works with the RIO Box.

RIO, the open cloud-based platform and digital brand of the TRATON GROUP, networks all players in the transport and logistics ecosystem, and provides a broad range of digital services. “At Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus, we believe in RIO’s vision. And that is why it is important to us that we can offer RIO to our customers in Latin America, as well,” says Roberto Cortes, CEO of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus. “We are working together with RIO on evolving the digital services and we are tailoring them specifically to the requirements of customers in Latin America.”

Collaborative development: Services put to the test

Currently RIO and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus are carrying out a field test with Brazilian customers until March 2019 to ensure that the range of services will meet all their requirements. Together they are testing and adapting existing services which are already established in Europe. RIO and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus are also starting to develop the first region-specific service together with customers: RIO Security. This places the main focus on the security of the trucks, trip and cargo, and aims to meet the highest level of cargo security technology for risk agencies.

In addition, existing RIO services will be adapted to the region locally. The focus is on local logistics regulations and customer needs, such as driver working hours – without neglecting the core features of RIO. Jan Kaumanns, CEO of RIO explains: “Our successful concept will also apply in Latin America, because we are convinced that modern logistics services must be simple and flexible to book, without the red tape. RIO is championing simple registration, an open partner approach and services that can be added and removed daily for specific vehicles.”

The Marketplace will also be the central location in Latin America for digital services such as vehicle tracking, driver communication, driving and efficiency analyses, digital maintenance management and tachograph data. Regional partners in many countries – Argentina, Mexico and Chile included – such as Omnilink, Continental, Pirelli Cyberfleet, PST Positron, Bosch and DriveUp will also offer their services on the Marketplace in future. The services on the platform are aimed at heavy-duty trucks that travel long distances from the plant to the distribution centre. And for smaller trucks, the services also facilitate deliveries in cities for the last mile.

RIO in series

Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus will be the first OEM partner to equip its EURO 5 vehicles with the RIO Box from 2019. Series installation has been planned for vehicles such as the MAN TGX and the VW Constellation and Delivery. “We are particularly pleased that we can retrofit around 4,000 trucks for Volkswagen customers free of charge,” explains Roberto Cortes. “All customers with an existing maintenance contract not only receive the free installation of the RIO Box, but they can also use RIO Essentials free of charge. We are very proud that we can offer such added value.” The RIO Box acts as an interface between the vehicle and the system and can also be retrofitted into any truck with an approved FMS interface.
