Off to Rio:
RIO conquers Latin America

- Introduction of RIO in Latin America with Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus

Brazilian customers are already testing RIO

- RIO Box will be offered at all VW trucks and buses from 2019 on

Following the successful launch in Europe, RIO takes the next step: the Go Live of the RIO platform with its digital services in Latin America. RIO is currently conducting a six-month customer test in Brazil until March 2019. Starting next year, RIO will be available to all Latin American customers: In 2019, Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus equips its EURO V vehicles with the RIO Box serially for the first time.

RIO, the open cloud-based platform and digital brand of the TRATON GROUP, networks all players in the transport and logistics ecosystem and offers a broad spectrum of digital services. "We at Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus believe in the vision of RIO. And that is why it is important to us that we can also offer RIO to our customers in Latin America," says Roberto Cortes, CEO of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus. "We work together with RIO on the further development of digital services and adapt them specifically to Latin American customer needs".

Joint development: Services put to the test

RIO and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus are currently conducting field tests with Brazilian customers in order to assure that the offer meets all their needs. Existing services that have already proven themselves in Europe are tested and adapted together. Furthermore, RIO and Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus are beginning to develop the first region specific service together with clients: RIO Security. The service focuses on the safety of trucks, tours and loads and is intended to meet the highest level of load securing technology for risk agencies.

In addition, existing RIO services will be specifically developed on site. The focus is on local logistics regulations and customer needs, such as driver working hours – without neglecting the core features of RIO. Jan Kaumanns, CEO of RIO explains: "Our successful concept will also apply in Latin America, because we are convinced that modern logistics services must be simple, flexible and unbureaucratic to book! RIO stands for simple registration, an open partner approach and services that can be added and debited daily on a vehicle basis".

The Marketplace will also be the central location in Latin America for digital services such as vehicle tracking, driver communication, driving and efficiency analyses, digital maintenance management or tachograph data. Regional partners – also from Argentina, Mexico and Chile – such as Omnilink, Continental, Pirelli Cyberfleet, PST Positron, Bosch and DriveUp will also offer their services in the Marketplace. The services on the platform are aimed on the one hand at heavy trucks that travel longer distances from the factory to the distribution centre. On the other hand, the services also facilitate the delivery of smaller trucks in the cities on the last mile.

RIO in series

Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus will be the first OEM partner to equip its EURO V vehicles with the RIO Box from 2019. Serial assembly is planned for the MAN TGX and the VW Constellation and Delivery, among others. "We are particularly pleased that we can retrofit around 4,000 trucks from Volkswagen customers free of charge," explains Roberto Cortes. "All customers with an existing maintenance contract not only receive the free installation of the RIO Box, but they can also use RIO Essentials free of charge. We are very proud to offer such added value." The RIO Box acts as an interface between vehicle and system and can also be retrofitted into any truck with an approved FMS interface.
